You can write a cover letter inside a resume, so it prints in the same fonts and colors and exports in the same PDF. It’s a custom section of the type Cover Letter.
This page is about writing a letter in the builder. To have Hiresweep AI write a cover letter for a job you saved in Applications, see Tailoring and cover letters.

Create a cover letter section

1

Add a section

In the builder’s Edit tab, select Add a section at the end of the section list. You can also open Custom Sections and choose Add a new custom section.
2

Choose the Cover Letter type

In Create a new custom section, enter a Title, for example “Cover letter” or “Cover letter, Acme”. Set Section Type to Cover Letter and select Create.
3

Add the letter

Open the new section and choose Add a new item. Create a new cover letter opens with two fields, Recipient and Content.
4

Write and save

Fill in both fields and select Create.

Recipient and Content

Recipient holds the address block. Put each part on its own line:
Content holds the letter itself: the greeting, a few paragraphs on why you fit the role, and your sign-off. Both are rich-text fields with the same toolbar as the rest of the builder: bold, italic, underline, lists, alignment, links and more. Select Fullscreen in the toolbar for a larger writing area, and Exit Fullscreen to go back. See Editing resume sections. A cover letter section prints without a section heading, so the letter starts with the recipient block.

Put the letter on its own page

1

Add a page

Open the Design tab, go to Layout and select Add Page.
2

Drag the section to the new page

In Layout, drag the cover letter section from its current page into the new page’s Main column.
3

Make the page full width (optional)

Turn on Full Width for that page so the letter uses the whole page width instead of leaving room for a sidebar.
4

Check the preview

Make sure the letter sits on its own page.
Pages print in order. To put the letter first, drag it to Page 1 and move your resume sections to Page 2.
Move to in an item’s menu moves single items, not whole sections. Use Layout to move the cover letter section between pages.

Several letters in one resume

Each letter is its own custom section, so you can:
  • keep one section per application and title them clearly, for example “Cover letter, Google”;
  • hide the ones you aren’t sending with Hide in the section’s menu;
  • copy a letter as a starting point with Duplicate in the section’s menu.
If you send many applications, it’s often tidier to duplicate the whole resume per job. See Managing resumes from the dashboard.

Tips

  • Keep it to 250–400 words.
  • Name the role and company, and refer to one or two requirements from the posting.
  • Proofread before you export.
